In 2018, prior to the family dinner, there was a guided tour in the Outdoor Museum. First we had tea in the house where the painter Paulus Potter once lived - famous for his “Bull”, that huge painting that was once taken in triumph by the emperor Napoleon to the Louvre in Paris and after his fall came to hang at the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague. In 1876 the publisher H.C. (Herman) Voorhoeve Jzn settled in this Paulus Potter House with his family. He was succeeded by his son J.N. (Johannes) Voorhoeve, and with J.H.C. (Hans) Voorhoeve entered the third generation of publishers. The publishing house remained on this canal for a hundred years, until 1976.
After we had tea we went to the adjoining house where, in the Dutch Golden Age, the landscape painter Jan van Goyen lived. The tour ended in the library of the Van Balckeneynde House, which together with the Paulus Potter House and the Jan van Goyen House form the Outdoor Museum. This museum was created at the instigation of the Historical Museum of The Hague, as a museum-outside-the-museum.
